This loadout is all about covering each other in Bloons TD Battles 2: Boomerangs handle Bloon rushes at all stages of the game as well as smaller blimp rushes, Ice Monkeys handle blimps in the late game and amplify the damage dealt by the other towers with Embrittlement and Super Brittle, and Monkey Subs deal early game damage, uncover camo Bloons, and deal with BADs. Loadout 3: Boomerang Monkey, Ice Monkey, Monkey Sub, Quincy Gwendolin is the best hero to use with this loadout, as she passively buffs towers with Heat It Up, and has a panic button to deal with rushes that the player might be unprepared for. Sometimes players will opt to swap the Alchemist for another tower that buffs the Tack Shooter such as Ice Monkeys, but these have pros and cons. Tack Shooters also handle all early waves with very few issues, allowing for an income lead to be generated. The idea is that Tack Zone becomes insanely strong with buffs, and both Monkey Village and Alchemist provide those buffs. This loadout is slightly map-dependent but is never weak in Bloons TD Battles 2. Loadout 2: Tack Shooter, Alchemist, Monkey Village, Gwendolin Any hero works well with this strategy, but something to cover that weakness is ideal Gwendolin tends to be best due to her panic button actives. A new player might find that their defense tends to be weak against an early MOAB or grouped ceramic send, but careful play with Snipers to complement the Dartling can handle those on most maps. Ninja Monkeys let the defense scale with Shinobi spam and Sticky Bombs. The Sniper Monkey acts as blimp defense with Maim MOAB, and generates a ton of cash while dealing with Bloons using Supply Drop. The Dartling Gunner can handle every wave and send in the very early rounds, allowing the player to get an income lead while eventually upgrading to Hydra Rockets. This loadout got significantly nerfed in the latest patch but is still plenty strong when played well. Loadout 1: Ninja Monkey, Sniper Monkey, Dartling Gunner, Gwendolin The last factor is grouped and spaced defense some towers are great at handling single versions of strong Bloons but fail against groups, and some deal great grouped damage but are weak against single targets, so loadouts should be able to handle both at all stages of the game if possible. The third is the ability to generate income efficient early game towers are needed so that surplus cash can go to income, and ideally, towers that generate cash directly can be used to both defend and accelerate income. The second is appropriate level scaling if a loadout has a weak early or mid-game, a rush from the opponent can end the game before the loadout's strengths can be used, and a weak late game means the loadout will fall off if early aggression fails. ![]() The first is Bloon-hitting capabilities players will find it difficult to win if their loadout is completely incapable of popping certain types of Bloons, such as camo-lead Bloons. Human resource professionals increasingly enhance their assessment tools with game elements-a process typically referred to as “gamification”-to make them more interesting and engaging for candidates, and they design and use “serious games” that can support skill assessment and development. With so much complexity, it's good that Civilization V is more newbie-friendly than its predecessors. However, commercial, off-the-shelf video games are not or are only rarely used to screen or test candidates, even though there is increasing evidence that they are indicative of various skills that are professionally valuable. Using the strategy game Civilization, this proof-of-concept study explores if strategy video games are indicative of managerial skills and, if so, of what managerial skills. Under controlled laboratory conditions, we asked forty business students to play the Civilization game and to participate in a series of assessment exercises. We find that students who had high scores in the game had better skills related to problem-solving and organizing and planning than the students who had low scores. In addition, a preliminary analysis of in-game data, including players’ interactions and chat messages, suggests that strategy games such as Civilization may be used for more precise and holistic “stealth assessments,” including personality assessments. While business games have a long history in personnel assessment and development, the use of digital games and game elements is also increasing (see, e.g., Ferrell et al. For example, computerized personality surveys and assessment exercises have been “gamified” with elements such as narratives, progress bars, and animations (Armstrong et al. 2016) to create a more engaging experience for applicants, and “serious” games-that is, digital games that serve purposes other than entertainment (Michael and Chen 2006)-have been designed for assessment, education, and training (see, e.g., Bellotti et al. The potential of commercial, off-the-shelf video games has long been ignored by HR research, but interest in them has recently surfaced. Several video games have been found to be able to be indicative of various skills that are professionally valuable, including persistence, problem-solving, and leadership (Lisk et al. 2009, 2015), which are often referred to as twenty-first-century skills (see, e.g., Chu et al. ( 2018) recently proposed that employers could use video games to screen or test applicants and that applicants should indicate their gaming experiences and achievements on their résumés. ![]() Obviously there are many other stories that belong on this list, and I’m sure there are teachers judging me over my inclusion or exclusion of some. You can find “The Story of an Hour” in almost any literature anthology, or online here. It’s also great for a solo study and focusing on symbolism or plot structure. If not, it’s a great introductory or paired text with Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice, or another 18 th century text with a strong, modern heroine. I suggest pairing this with HTRLLAP if you’re using it. Is it possible, they think, that this woman is more modern than I realized? Could she possibly be happy that she’s not just a wife anymore? If that isn’t interesting enough, it’s the sudden and ironic ending that really gets me. However, once she gets in front of the window and has her taboo delight in the thoughts of freedom, I see my students sit up a little straighter. Yeah, she must grieve in private, they mutter, as she’s weak. Of course, they think, another 18 th century heroine, driven completely by the life and will of her husband. I like teaching this story because my students think they have it figured out just one paragraph in. “A Rose for Emily” by William FaulknerĪnother popular AP Lit short story is “The Story of an Hour.” This is another short one, and frequently used at the beginning of the year. “Girl” is available to read from The New Yorker here. For lesson materials on “Girl,” this short story boot camp lesson pairs it with “Everyday Use” in a study of characterization. Another strategy is pair it with a similar text with parent-child conflicts ( A Raisin in the Sun and Fences both come to mind). ![]() Pair this text with skills that have to do with dialogue, characterization, or structure. I also love picking apart the tone of the narrator, who scolds her daughter and accuses her of being a slut, all the while establishing that she does it because she loves her. Kincaid’s lyrical style in this text is poem-like, making it a challenge even if it is short. We even have time to read it a third time once we’ve assigned some AP Lit skills or themes for analysis. I often read it aloud, then ask students to read it again immediately after. It’s actually for that reason that I love teaching it. This one is as short as Sonny is long (only a 3 minute read). “Sonny’s Blues” by James BaldwinĬontrasting “Sonny’s Blues” is “Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid. Check out that lesson here, which pairs it with another favorite, “Lamb to the Slaughter” by Roald Dahl. ![]() This story takes about 21 minutes to read. I use it to analyze plot structure and sequencing, a difficult skill to target. “The Veldt” – Of these three, I find this story about a child’s nursery-gone-mad the most challenging. This story takes about 10 minutes to read. Furthermore, it easily pairs with the poem that shares its name by Sara Teasdale. I love to focus on setting and theme, which leads to analysis of conflict as well. “There Will Come Soft Rains” – This is my favorite of Bradbury’s short stories. This story takes about 20 minutes to read. While the plot is thrilling, it’s really the analysis of the details in this one that makes it AP-worthy. “The Sound of Thunder” – This story mixes time travel with tourism in an exciting tale. The three Bradbury texts I see suggested for AP Lit the most are these: Most students read Fahrenheit 451 earlier in their high school career, but I love introducing them to his short stories as well. I couldn’t find a single Bradbury text that rose higher than others, so I’d just suggest including at least one. “A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’ConnorĪnother master of the short story form is Ray Bradbury. The story is pretty short, only a seven minute read. This is a story you can teach and return to over and over again throughout the year. Once students understand the taboo topic that drives the conversation, they’re eager to read it again and analyze it. However, Hemingway’s sparse narrative style and unique choices in dialogue are an excellent opportunity to teach subtext. Most have no idea what is going on, which is exactly what you would expect. I love watching my students discuss this story after a cold read. Not only is it rich with literary elements for analysis, the story has this wonderful “What the heck?” element to it. I paired it with setting in this Skill Spotlight lesson. You could literally grab a skill at random and make it work for this story. Of all the Skill Spotlight lessons I’ve written, “Hills Like White Elephants” is by far the most recommended by AP Lit teachers for the skills in the CED. |
